7.62 x 51 mm NATO or 308 Winchester

The 308 Winchester started as a military round used in the M14 rifle. Originally adopted as the 7.62 M80 . The maximum allowable pressures by SAMMI standards of the commercial 308 Winchester are considerably higher than the 7.62 x 51 Nato standard of 50,000 psi. That being said it is rare indeed for any major manufacturer to load to maximum pressures.

The "308" has spawned a number of related rounds such as the 243 Winchester, the 7mm O8, 358 Winchester, and the 307 Winchester which is a rimmed version of this cartridge.
